Anthropic just released research from a tool called Anthropic Interviewer—an AI system that conducted 1,250 interviews with professionals about how they actually use AI at work. Not usage logs. Not click-through rates. Actual conversations about what people do with AI outputs after they leave the chat window, how they feel about it, and what role they imagine AI playing in their futures.
The meta-recursion is almost poetic: using AI to understand how humans use AI. But the findings are genuinely interesting, particularly where self-reported behavior diverges sharply from observed reality.
The headline numbers look optimistic. Among the general workforce sample, 86% reported that AI saves them time and 65% expressed satisfaction with AI's role in their work. Creatives reported even stronger productivity gains—97% said AI saved them time and 68% claimed it increased work quality.
But optimism doesn't tell the whole story. The interviews surfaced significant anxiety beneath the productivity gains. Among the general workforce, 69% mentioned social stigma around using AI at work. A fact-checker told the interviewer: "A colleague recently said they hate AI and I just said nothing. I don't tell anyone my process because I know how a lot of people feel about AI."
While 41% felt secure that human skills remain irreplaceable, 55% expressed anxiety about AI's impact on their future. Within that anxious group, 25% set hard boundaries around AI use, 25% adapted by taking on more specialized tasks, and only 8% had no clear remediation plan.
Here's where perception diverges from reality in fascinating ways. When asked to describe their AI use, 65% of participants characterized it as augmentative (AI collaborating with them) versus 35% automative (AI directly performing tasks). But Anthropic's previous analysis of actual Claude conversations showed a much more even split: 47% augmentation and 49% automation.
That's a significant gap. Professionals perceive their AI use as far more collaborative than their actual usage patterns suggest. Possible explanations include sample differences, post-chat refinement that doesn't show up in logs, use of multiple AI providers for different task types, or simply that people prefer to think of themselves as collaborating with tools rather than delegating to them.
The future workers envision splits the difference: 48% anticipated transitioning toward roles focused on managing and overseeing AI systems rather than performing direct technical work. A pastor imagined AI handling "the admin side which will free me up to be with the people," while emphasizing the importance of "good boundaries" to avoid becoming "so dependent on AI that I can't live without it."
Creative professionals exhibited the sharpest contradictions. They reported dramatic productivity improvements—one web content writer claimed output increased from 2,000 to over 5,000 polished words daily, a photographer reduced turnaround time from 12 weeks to 3—while simultaneously expressing deep economic anxiety and concern about creative identity.
Like the general workforce, 70% of creatives mentioned managing peer judgment around AI use. One map artist explained: "I don't want my brand and my business image to be so heavily tied to AI and the stigma that surrounds it."
Economic displacement concerns ran through creative interviews. A voice actor stated bluntly: "Certain sectors of voice acting have essentially died due to the rise of AI." A composer worried about platforms that could "leverage AI tech along with their publishing libraries to infinitely generate new music," flooding markets with cheap alternatives. Another artist captured the bind: "Realistically, I'm worried I'll need to keep using generative AI and even start selling generated content just to keep up in the marketplace so I can make a living."
All 125 creative participants wanted to maintain control over their outputs. But many acknowledged that boundary proves unstable in practice. One artist admitted: "The AI is driving a good bit of the concepts; I simply try to guide it… 60% AI, 40% my ideas."
The scientific sample revealed different patterns. Trust and reliability concerns appeared in 79% of interviews. Scientists primarily confined AI use to peripheral tasks—literature review, coding, writing—rather than core research activities like hypothesis generation and experimentation.
An information security researcher explained: "If I have to double check and confirm every single detail the agent is giving me to make sure there are no mistakes, that kind of defeats the purpose." A mathematician echoed this: "After I have to spend the time verifying the AI output, it basically ends up being the same time."
Interestingly, scientists expressed relatively low worry about job displacement. Some pointed to tacit knowledge that resists digitization—a microbiologist described working with bacterial strains where "you had to initiate various steps when the cells reached specific colors. The differences in color have to be seen to be understood and are seldom written down anywhere."
Yet 91% of scientists wanted more AI assistance, particularly for hypothesis generation and experimental design. One medical scientist said: "I wish AI could help generate or support hypotheses or look for novel interactions/relationships that are not immediately evident for humans." Another wanted "an AI which could feel like a valuable research partner… that could bring something new to the table."
The gap between desired and actual AI use in science represents both a product limitation and a market opportunity. Scientists know what they want. Current tools can't reliably deliver it yet.
The methodological innovation here deserves attention. Conducting 1,250 qualitative interviews manually would be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming. Anthropic Interviewer made it feasible to gather rich qualitative data at quantitative scale.
The system operates in three stages: planning (creating interview rubrics), interviewing (conducting adaptive 10-15 minute conversations), and analysis (identifying themes and patterns). Human researchers collaborated with the AI at each stage—reviewing plans, analyzing transcripts, interpreting findings.
This isn't perfect. The research has clear limitations: selection bias from recruiting through crowdworker platforms, demand characteristics from being interviewed by AI about AI usage, inability to capture non-verbal emotional cues, and the inherent ambiguity in self-reports we see in the augmentation/automation gap.
But it represents a new capability for understanding AI's societal impact at scale. Anthropic plans to use this tool for ongoing research with specific communities—creatives, scientists, teachers—and to inform both product development and policy positions.
