"Hey, Plex." Samsung is letting users summon Perplexity directly into their Galaxy S26 — with access to Notes, Calendar, Gallery, and Reminders. This isn't a partnership announcement. It's a shift in how phones work.

Samsung confirmed this week that Perplexity will be integrated into Galaxy AI on the S26, giving users a third AI option alongside Bixby and Gemini. But the more significant reveal is the architecture behind it: Samsung is building what it calls a "multi-agent ecosystem," opening the OS to different AI agents that users can call on based on preference and task. Perplexity isn't a skinned app. It has system-level access to core phone functions.

Why This Is Different From Swapping Default Apps

Every smartphone platform has allowed users to change default browsers and email clients for years. What Samsung is describing is categorically different. When you say "Hey, Plex," Perplexity isn't just launching an app — it's operating as an agent inside the phone's OS, with access to your calendar, reminders, notes, gallery, and select third-party applications.

That's not a shortcut. That's an AI with ambient access to your personal data and scheduling infrastructure, ready to act on your behalf. The distinction matters because it changes the trust relationship between the user, the device, and the AI company. You're not using Perplexity to search the web. You're inviting it into the operational layer of your personal life.

Samsung's bet is that users have developed genuine loyalty to specific AI tools — and that forcing them to use whatever AI the hardware manufacturer chose is a competitive liability. What Samsung is formalizing has been happening informally for years. People already use different AI tools for different tasks — Perplexity for research and real-time answers, Claude for writing and reasoning, ChatGPT for broad general use, Gemini for Google ecosystem integration. Samsung is proposing to make that switching native, contextual, and voice-activated. The question isn't whether multi-agent use is real — it clearly is. The question is whether formalizing it at the OS level creates a meaningfully better experience, or just more complexity.

The answer probably depends on how well the integration is actually implemented. "Access to Calendar and Notes" can mean anything from genuinely useful contextual awareness to shallow read-only permissions that don't deliver on the promise. The February 25th Unpacked event will tell us more about the depth of the integration, but the architecture Samsung is describing is real and represents a meaningful departure from the single-assistant model every other major platform has pursued.

What This Means for the AI Ecosystem

Perplexity's inclusion is strategically interesting beyond the feature itself. The company has positioned itself as a research-first alternative to traditional search — real-time answers with citations, designed for people who want information quickly and accurately. Its presence in Galaxy AI signals that Samsung sees AI search as a distinct category worth accommodating natively, separate from the general-purpose assistant role Gemini or Bixby fills.

It also puts pressure on Google in a place Google is sensitive. Gemini is already the default AI on Galaxy phones through a partnership with Samsung. Having Perplexity as a named, voice-activated alternative on the same hardware is not a comfortable position for the company that owns the dominant search paradigm and is watching AI gradually redirect the queries that sustain its advertising business.

For marketers and growth leaders building AI into customer engagement strategies, the multi-agent phone model is an early signal of how consumers will increasingly interact with information. The assumption that a single AI platform captures a user's attention is already breaking down. The assumption that search, assistant, and agent functions live in separate apps is also breaking down. Brands that understand how AI agents make decisions on behalf of users — what sources they cite, what recommendations they surface, how they respond to commercial intent — will be better positioned as this architecture matures.

The phone is becoming an AI platform. Samsung is the first major hardware maker to say so explicitly and build accordingly.
