More fundamentally, the open-source nature of modern AI development makes national technology bans increasingly meaningless. DeepSeek's innovations will be incorporated into other models, its techniques will be replicated, and its capabilities will be available regardless of official policy positions.
This isn't about defending Chinese AI companies—it's about recognizing that cybersecurity policy based on national origin rather than technical merit is doomed to fail. The same energy spent on banning DeepSeek could be redirected toward actually securing government systems against the threats that matter.
Countries serious about cybersecurity need to move beyond the theater of AI nationalism and focus on the boring work of actually securing their systems. This means better authentication, regular security audits, proper incident response planning, and—most importantly—acknowledging that the biggest threats to digital security come from within.
The DeepSeek bans are feel-good policies that make politicians look tough on China while doing nothing to address the fundamental vulnerabilities that make organizations easy targets. It's time to stop building digital walls and start building digital competence.
