The Real Data Point Is the Culture Shift, Not the Cheating

The more revealing finding in MIT's report isn't that students can cheat, professors have known that for years. It's that attendance at office hours is down, online discussion participation is down, and study groups in dorms and libraries are anecdotally thinning out, all within about three years. That's not a cheating problem. That's students rationally deciding that the collaborative, effortful parts of learning aren't worth the time when the deliverable can be generated instead. If the credential only requires the deliverable, and not the struggle that used to produce it, students are responding exactly as the incentive structure tells them to.

Why "AI-Proofing" the Classroom Misses the Question

The responses so far, oral exams, handwritten essays, banned laptops, dropped honor codes, are all attempts to make cheating harder rather than to ask why the assignment needed to be cheat-able in the first place. Princeton abandoning a century-old unsupervised honor system after an AI scandal is a genuinely significant institutional moment, but it's a defensive one. It restores supervision. It doesn't address why an unsupervised essay was ever a reliable proxy for understanding, or why a supervised one necessarily is either. Locking the door tighter is not the same as asking whether the room needs to exist in its current shape.

What This Should Make You Ask About the Degree Itself

Here's the version of the question MIT's report raises without quite asking it: if a tool can pass most of undergraduate coursework on command, what was that coursework verifying about the student who completed it honestly? For a long time, the assignment and the learning were assumed to be the same thing, do the work, prove you learned something. AI breaks that assumption cleanly. The work can now exist without the learning, which means every institution built around grading the work as a proxy for the learning has to either find a new proxy or admit the old one was always shakier than the diploma implied. That's not a reason to write off higher education. It's a reason to stop assuming the format of a degree ever guaranteed what everyone agreed it guaranteed.

The signal you've been trusting may already be broken, and figuring out what a real signal looks like now is a genuine strategic question, not just an academic one.
