If your creator strategy still starts with follower count, you're doing it wrong. And if you need proof, consider that the NFL — an organization with one of the broadest cultural footprints on the planet — is spending serious time thinking about which audiences matter, not just how many people are watching.
That's the premise behind a live podcast session at Creator Economy Live East on July 29, where Creator Authority CEO and Co-Founder Brendan Gahan will record an episode digging into the NFL's creator playbook. The session is called "Inside the NFL's Creator Playbook," and it promises to go beyond campaign highlights into the actual decisions: how creators get selected, which communities they reach, and how the league defines what success even looks like.
It's a good conversation to pay attention to — not because you're marketing to football fans, but because the NFL's challenge is a version of everyone's challenge.
The NFL doesn't have one audience. It has overlapping communities — lifelong fans, fantasy players, casual viewers, gaming audiences, people who follow individual athletes more than any team, younger fans who engage almost entirely through social content. Each of those groups has its own creators, its own language, its own expectations.
Sound familiar? Most brands are in the same boat, even without the billion-dollar media rights deals. You're trying to reach distinct segments through voices those segments already trust — and a creator with 2 million followers who speaks to none of your actual buyers is just expensive noise.
Gahan has been making this argument for years. In a public conversation about B2B creator marketing, he put it plainly: "A mass audience is generally less important, and it is more about the right audience." His context was LinkedIn, but the logic holds everywhere.
Here's the real friction point most PR and marketing teams face: even if you know audience fit matters more than raw reach, you still have to explain that to a room full of executives who find big numbers very comforting.
A creator with 400,000 highly relevant followers is a harder pitch than a creator with 4 million general ones. The big number is intuitive. The relevance argument requires actual evidence — industry data, engagement quality, audience demographics, content alignment.
Gahan has written about this dynamic in the context of LinkedIn's Creator Marketplace, which gives marketers access to first-party audience data: job titles, industries, locations, posting behavior. His point is that this kind of information exists to help you build the internal case, not just validate your gut feeling.
That's a skill gap worth closing. The brands winning at creator marketing aren't just picking better creators — they're better at communicating why those creators are the right choice.
A few things worth taking from this, whether you're watching the session or not:
Gahan brings 18 years of experience to this conversation — including leading one of the first YouTube influencer activations back in 2006, founding Epic Signal (later acquired by Mekanism), and serving as Chief Social Officer at Mekanism before launching Creator Authority. According to Influencer Marketing Hub, Creator Economy Live East will bring together more than 500 brands, 50-plus speakers, and 15 sessions on creator partnerships and measurement. This session is one worth bookmarking.
The NFL playbook is worth understanding because it's operating at the hardest version of this problem — massive scale, multiple communities, high-stakes brand alignment — and apparently doing it thoughtfully. That's not nothing.
If you're rethinking your own creator or influencer strategy and want a team that knows how to make the relevance argument stick, Winsome Marketing can help you build something worth showing the room.
