Quality Management Standards will accelerate consolidation in the audit marketplace. They have people who can build documentation frameworks, maintain version control systems, and establish accuracy verification protocols.
Smaller firms face a different calculation: invest disproportionate resources in AI governance infrastructure for a limited number of audit engagements, or exit the audit market entirely and refocus on tax, advisory, and consulting work where the standards are less stringent.
The unique qualifier for CPAs—the only service they can provide that others legally cannot—is audit work. When the barrier to entry for that work becomes prohibitively high, the profession itself begins to fragment.
Firms that will thrive under the new standards aren't necessarily those with the most sophisticated AI implementations. They're firms that treated governance as prerequisite rather than afterthought.
They established documentation protocols before deploying tools. They created version control systems before they needed them. They built accuracy verification into their workflows from day one rather than retrofitting it under compliance pressure.
This requires a fundamental mindset shift: viewing AI implementation not as technology adoption but as quality management system expansion. Every new tool creates new documentation obligations, new verification requirements, new retirement considerations.
The question isn't whether AI can improve audit efficiency. The question is whether your governance infrastructure can sustain AI deployment at scale while meeting quality management standards that weren't designed with artificial intelligence in mind.
