For about eighteen months, a cottage industry grew up around a simple arbitrage: write content designed to be scraped by AI systems, earn citations, capture visibility. Short paragraphs. Statistic density. Definition-style explanations that regurgitate common knowledge. No perspective, no author, no point of view. Just the structural signals that early LLMs responded to.

That window is closing. Matthew Gibbons laid out the case clearly for WebFX on March 16th, and the argument is worth taking seriously by anyone with a content budget and a GEO strategy in progress.

Three Eras, Three Different Games

The WebFX framing organizes search optimization history into three distinct phases that map directly to what success required.

Traditional SEO optimized for search engines. Success looked like rankings and blue-link clicks. AI Citation Bait, which peaked around 2023, optimized for LLM scraping behavior — hallucination-prone models that responded to surface-level signals. Success looked like citation text in AI responses. The Agentic AI Era, now underway, optimizes for human users via AI agents. Success looks like selection, trust, and user retention.

The shift from era two to era three is not incremental. It's a fundamental change in how AI systems evaluate content — and it's being driven by the launch of agent-based browsing from ChatGPT and Perplexity's Comet browser, both of which browse the web in real time, weighing context, clarity, and relevance rather than simply scraping available text.

The question has changed from "Can I get cited by AI tools?" to "Would an AI acting on a user's behalf actually choose my content?"

Why AI Bait Always Had a Structural Problem

The April Fools' incident is the case study that crystallizes the issue. A Welsh journalist running a local news site published a satirical story claiming his town had the world's highest concentration of roundabouts. Google's AI Overview cited it as fact.

Harmless in that instance. The mechanism it reveals is not. Early AI systems responded to structural signals — formatting, keyword density, apparent factual density — without evaluating context, credibility, or authorial intent. Content engineered to mimic those signals could earn citations that had nothing to do with accuracy or genuine authority.

Agentic systems are being trained specifically to close that gap. They read between the lines. They evaluate whether a source has genuine expertise, whether claims are corroborated, whether the content serves a user's actual need or merely performs the appearance of doing so.

AI bait doesn't just fail in this environment. It actively signals low credibility to systems trained to detect exactly that pattern.

Citations Don't Equal Clicks — and That's the Other Problem

Even where AI bait earned citations under the old model, the business value was always more fragile than it appeared. According to Pew Research Center data cited in the WebFX analysis, 88% of AI Overviews cite three or more sources, with only 1% citing a single source. AI responses routinely paraphrase cited content, strip nuance, and deliver answers directly — no click required.

A brand that earns a citation but gives the user no reason to go deeper has created what the piece accurately describes as invisible content: technically present in the AI response, functionally irrelevant to any measurable business outcome. No traffic. No conversion. No brand relationship built.

The citation was the metric. It was never the goal.

What Agentic AI Actually Rewards

The signals that matter in the agentic era are not exotic. They're the signals that good content has always carried: topical clarity that quickly matches search intent, structured layout that's easy to parse and summarize, credible sourcing that reinforces trust, experience-driven insight that adds unique value beyond generic information, and UX and load speed that serve agent and user alike.

The difference is that these signals now determine whether an AI agent, acting on a user's behalf, selects your content at all — not just whether a human user chooses to click. The evaluator has changed. The standards for earning selection have become more rigorous, not less.

The practical implication for content and growth strategy: E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness — is no longer a Google quality rater framework abstraction. It's the actual selection criterion for agentic AI systems. Author bylines matter. Original research matters. First-person expertise signals matter. Schema markup that helps AI agents understand content structure, not just crawl it, matters.

The Brands That Are Already Behind

The irony of the AI bait era is that many brands that invested most aggressively in it are now the furthest behind. They built content infrastructure optimized for a behavior pattern that's being systematically engineered out of the systems they were targeting.

Rebuilding that content for the agentic era isn't a small update — it requires a different philosophy about what content is for. Not the appearance of authority. Actual authority. Not the structure of helpfulness. Genuine helpfulness. The AI-informed content strategy that wins in this environment is, somewhat paradoxically, the one that stops trying to game AI systems and starts writing for the humans those systems are trying to serve.

The machines got smarter. The best response is to stop writing for machines.
