Handshake AI — a training data supplier to OpenAI and other major labs — is actively recruiting improv actors, sketch comedians, and stage performers to improvise on video with strangers, unscripted, for the explicit purpose of teaching AI models how human emotion actually works. The role pays an average of $74 an hour. It asks for "emotional awareness" defined as the "ability to recognize, express, and shift between emotions in a way that feels authentic and human."

That's the gap. And the industry has apparently concluded that closing it requires something you cannot scrape from the internet: authentic, emotionally layered, spontaneous human interaction, generated live by people who have spent years learning to feel out loud in front of strangers.
Handshake AI's demand for training data tripled last summer. By November, the company had surpassed a $150 million run rate. The ethical weight of that is not nothing. Taking the money now to help build the thing that might replace you later is not a hypothetical dilemma. It is the actual choice in front of working performers between gigs.
The race at the frontier of AI is no longer purely about raw capability. It's about emotional intelligence — building systems that don't just answer questions but understand the person asking them. OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode, xAI's Grok voice chat, Anthropic's Claude voice feature — these are all products that need to do more than talk. They need to connect. And connection requires something that pattern-matching on text data has never reliably produced.
The direction of travel is toward AI assistants that detect stress before you name it, adjust tone when you're grieving, match energy when you're excited. That's not a distant projection. It's the stated product goal of multiple companies, funded by the training data that improv actors are generating right now.

Most AI-assisted marketing content is tonally flat. It is correct without being warm, informative without being felt. The brands closing that gap aren't doing it by finding a better model.
