GPT-5.5 Instant is now the default model for every ChatGPT user — free, paid, and API. It replaces GPT-5.3 Instant, which stays available for paid users for another three months before retirement.

The headline numbers: 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims on high-stakes prompts covering medicine, law, and finance. A 37.3% reduction in inaccurate claims on conversations users had already flagged for factual errors. Benchmark improvements across competition math (65.4% → 81.2%), PhD-level science (78.5% → 85.6%), and expert multimodal reasoning (69.2% → 76.0%). Those are not marginal gains.

The Improvement That Actually Matters

The most revealing example in OpenAI's own release isn't the benchmark chart — it's the algebra problem.

What's left is direct, usable, and appropriately calibrated to what was actually asked.

This is harder to do than it looks. Most model updates make responses longer in the name of completeness. Trimming without losing substance requires a different kind of judgment — knowing when more isn't better.

Personalization Gets a Transparency Layer

GPT-5.5 Instant is also faster and more accurate at pulling from past chats, connected files, and Gmail when personalization can improve a response. The tea shop recommendation example in OpenAI's release makes the point plainly: one response gives generic San Francisco suggestions, the other references what you already drink and where you already go.

More meaningfully, OpenAI is introducing memory sources — a visible record of what context was used to personalize a response, with controls to delete or correct it. You can see which past chats or saved memories shaped an answer and remove anything that's no longer accurate. That's a reasonable design choice, and one that will matter more as personalization becomes deeper.
