Franco Valentino points out, "Only thirty percent, a third of traffic actually goes to the open web, meaning your websites. Everything else goes to some type of Google property."
This shift has forced marketers to rethink their strategies. Ross Henderson notes, "We need to learn how to play in that new system. And part of that, I think, as Franco mentioned, is to really focus on owning those relationships with our customers, with our potential customers."

Franco Valentino observes, "People are using Google less and less, because the results are frankly, bad nowadays compared to what they used to be." He mentions alternatives like Perplexity, which provide more direct answers to user queries.
To adapt, marketers need to focus on providing clear, concise answers to user questions. Shannon O'Shea, a senior writer at Winsome, suggests, "A great way to approach this, interrogating your content to make sure it's actually valuable and helpful... is to make sure your 'okay buts' are answered."
The discussion also touched on the potential breakup of Google due to antitrust concerns. Franco Valentino predicts, "Google is going to get broken up. So, you know, this disruption is going to cost a lot of opportunity as well for the early adopters in whatever turns out to be maybe there's a competitor to Google Ads."

Given the uncertainty surrounding Google's future and the changing nature of search, it's crucial for marketers to diversify their traffic sources. Franco Valentino advises, "You have to do those things these days, because otherwise, your competitors are gonna eat your clock [lunch]."
Ross Henderson adds, "How can we broaden and add more diverse channels and platforms and ways for us to reach our consumers?" This might involve exploring new platforms, leveraging social media, and creating content tailored for different channels.
